Iconic Figures Commemorated On Black History Month Activities Missouri

In America, they have a month with which they celebrate the African American people. In the American history, many colored people have played vital roles to enable it to be where it is today. The black history month activities Missouri are events carried out to honor black heroes. It was established in the 1920s by Woodson Carter. The month of February was chosen because Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass were born on this special month.

Because of which took place in early 20s, leaders from African American united to form a civil rights party known as NAACP [National Association for the Advancement of Colored People]. Note that the party hundred anniversaries were celebrated on 12th February 2009.

Those who get to be remembered on this time of the year, among them are Jack Johnson. For those who may not remember him, he was the first black to hold a world Heavyweight champion boxing title in 1908 to 1915. They also commemorate John Mercer who was the 1st black to be a legal representative in Ohio after qualifying in 1854. He was also the first to be elected as a clerk of Ohio town in 1855.

Thurgood Marshall was another African American to be appointed to the United States supreme courts. The then president Lyndon B. Johnson is the one that gave him the post that he served from 1967 to 1991. The other guy who is celebrated over this period of time is George Washington Carver, an entrepreneur who was able to derive 300 products from peanuts such as medicinal oils and cosmetics.

The first black to be elected in the US senate was Hiram Rhodes. He did represent the Mississippi State in the senate for one year from 1870 to 1871. The other iconic person was Shirley Chisholm. She rose to become the number one colored person to be elected to the House of Representatives. She was a representative of the New York State back in 1972 she vied for presidency making her the first woman candidate to do so in the US.

The African American population in 1870 stood at 4.8m million people. In 2007, the number was estimated to have risen to 40.7 million and study shows that in 2060, 18 percent of Americans will be blacks. Its remembered that in 1940, Hattie was the first black to perform and win a prestigious academy award as she was loyal as a slave in a play, Gone with the Wind.

In 1976, the black month was extended to a month-long. This period offers the opportunity to emphasize on the history and achievements of the African Americans. Students get the opportunity to learn about the famous black Americans and at the same time polish their internet surfing skills.

The number of blacks military and the veterans are getting high everyday. Considering what they go through, there is need for them to be recognized over the month. Racism was common though it has reduced significantly unlike before. These months activities symbolize unity and reminding the people of the need for the Americans to appreciate African American on their soil.
